Burj Khalifa Lake is the shimmering centrepiece of Downtown Dubai — a 30-acre man-made lake sitting between the world’s tallest building, The Dubai Mall and Souk Al Bahar. It is also the stage for the Dubai Fountain, the world’s largest choreographed fountain system. Best of all, watching it costs nothing. Here’s how to plan your visit.
What is Burj Khalifa Lake?
Often shortened to Burj Lake, this artificial lake was built as part of the Downtown Dubai masterplan by Emaar. Its water jets, designed by WET Design, shoot up to around 150 metres and are choreographed to music using thousands of lights and colour projectors. The lake is ringed by a waterfront promenade, restaurants, a souk and the Burj Khalifa itself — which means one stop gives you several of Dubai’s headline attractions.
Dubai Fountain show timings
Shows run in two blocks:
- Afternoon: 1:00 PM and 1:30 PM daily, with Fridays at 2:00 PM and 2:30 PM
- Evening: 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM, every 30 minutes
Each performance lasts roughly five minutes, and the playlist rotates between Arabic classics, Bollywood tracks, opera and international pop — so no two shows feel identical.
Two things worth knowing. Timings shift during Ramadan and public holidays, when afternoon shows are usually suspended and evening shows start after Iftar. And the lake has been through a phased renovation, with a second upgrade phase introducing new lighting and choreography. Check Emaar or Visit Dubai before you go.
Best viewing spots around the lake
Free:
- The Dubai Mall Waterfront Promenade — the classic spot, closest to the jets. Arrive 15–20 minutes early in peak season (November to March).
- Souk Al Bahar bridge — a wider, elevated angle that frames the Burj Khalifa and the fountain together. Great for photos.
- Burj Park — quieter, further back, and ideal if you’re with kids or want space to sit.
Paid:
- Dubai Fountain Boardwalk — a 272-metre floating walkway that takes you out over the water for a close-up view.
- Burj Khalifa Lake Ride — a traditional abra takes you onto the lake itself during a performance, roughly 20 minutes and typically in the AED 65–100 range per person. Book ahead; capacity is limited.
Experiences beyond the fountain
Dine with a view. Restaurants along Souk Al Bahar and the Dubai Mall promenade offer terrace tables facing the lake. Reserve specifically for a fountain-facing table during show hours, or you’ll be seated indoors.
Pair it with At the Top. Book a Burj Khalifa observation deck slot for late afternoon, catch sunset from level 124 or 148, then come down for the evening fountain shows.
Watch the Burj Khalifa LED show. The tower’s facade lights up on its own schedule through the evening. Time it right and you get the fountain and the light show in one frame.
See it twice. A 6:00 PM show in fading daylight and a 9:00 or 10:00 PM show under full lighting look like two different attractions.
How to get there
Take the Dubai Metro Red Line to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station, then use the air-conditioned link bridge into the mall and walk through to the lake exit near the ground-floor promenade. Driving is possible, but Dubai Mall parking fills fast on weekends and holiday evenings.
Best time to visit
November to March brings comfortable evening temperatures and the biggest crowds. Summer visits are still doable if you stick to the 9:00 PM and later shows. Weekday evenings are noticeably calmer than Friday and Saturday.
Quick tips
- Stand upwind — the promenade gets a fine spray on breezy nights.
- Shoot video in portrait; the jets are tall, not wide.
- The last show is at 11:00 PM, and the promenade empties quickly after.
- Free viewing areas are stroller-accessible.
Burj Khalifa Lake works as a 20-minute stop or a full evening out. Give it the full evening — dinner, a boardwalk walk and two shows from different angles is one of the best-value nights in Dubai.
